"Space Codes" with NASA at the NCM
The NCM will present "Space Codes" at the Museum. NASA senior scientist, Ryan Archer, will speak about data encryption to and from space. This event is free and kid-friendly, but registration is required. Please note this event is SOLD OUT.
Secure communications between Houston’s Johnson Space Center and the Space Shuttle were vital. As part of a joint effort between NASA, the Department of Defense, and NSA, the Space Shuttle Encryption System became operational with the launch of Columbia, STS-4, in 1982. Today, NASA continues to encrypt data from space flights and satellites. On the horizon there are other challenges approaching with the first optical communications systems being fielded and higher data rates than Radio Frequency systems can provide.
